South Ronaldsay
South Ronaldsay Map
SOUTH RONALDSAY (ON Rognvalds-ey, Rognvald's Isle) is one of the most beautiful of all the Orkney Islands and it has a charm of its own. The island is divided into six parishes, the inhabitants of which each have their own nicknames. It is now joined to Burray by the Ayre of Cara (ND478949) on the east side of Barrier No.4, which is the only man-made ayre in Orkney. Ayre (ON Eyrr, a gravelly beach) in Orkney means a sandy or gravelly spit of land enclosing a lagoon, which is open to the sea. Udal Law raises interesting questions about the ownership of this new land.
