A Little Piece of Orkney

During WWII, Orkney was described as looking as if it was suspended by barrage balloons. There were even balloons over Scapa Flow itself, flying from 17 balloon trawlers. Despite difficulties caused by the wind - the day after they finally got 40 balloons aloft, a gale blew 39 away - there were 81 balloons by 1943.
