Music inspired by the Archaeology and History of Orkney
Ross-shire musicians Bob Pegg and Bill Taylor have collaborated with experts in ancient musical instruments to produce this intriguing CD of the music that could have been heard during the first 5000 years of Orkney’s history.
The tracks move down through the years, beginning with music that might have been played at Skara Brae with shells, whistles and clay-pot drums. Tunes from Pictish and Viking times are played on a great variety of instruments including clarsach, triplepipes, bray harp and chalumeau (a proto-clarinet). St Rognvald’s pilgrimage to the Holy Land is represented by readings of some of his verses and the type of music he might have heard on his travels. Songs include a solo version of the medieval Hymn to St Magnus and the epic ballad of The Twa Sisters.
These skilfully performed pieces conjure up vivid impressions of Orkney’s rich history and make fascinating listening for anyone interested in our past.
