These earthenware soup bowls are such a wonderfully satisfying shape that I just want to clasp my hands around them. If you use the matching casserole dish as a tureen you can have a wonderfully elegant first course for your dinner party.
There are several good soup recipes you could use in Recipes from the Orkney Islands. I haven't tried this one myself yet but it sounds interesting.
Orcadian Oatmeal Soup
1 large onion 2 small carrots 1 leek A little turnip or cabbage 25g (1 oz) oatmeal 600ml (1 pint) stock 450ml (3/4 pint) milk Seasoning Fat
Prepare and dice all the vegetables. Toss the vegetables in the melted fat until coated. Add the oatmeal and fry for a few minutes. Add the stock and the seasoning and simmer for 45 minutes. The soup can now be liquidised or sieved if required. Add the milk and reheat before serving.
The bowls are oven, microwave and dishwasher safe and lead-free.
