Furniture
Orkney has many unique dialect words, but some are shared with Scotland, such as 'creepie'. When I was a child the stool beside the fire was always referred to as 'the creepie'.
I have a sea-grass creepie and it is still in excellent condition after more than twenty-five years service as spare seating, foot-stool and occasional table.
There is a waiting list for the stools made by the Orkney Furniture Maker, Kevin Gauld. Please contact us if you would like a time estimate before placing an order.

Kevin Gauld has been making Orkney furniture for nine years, since he left school at sixteen to become an apprentice with a local firm. He is now one of a growing band of young Orcadians using the traditional crafts in original ways and producing beautiful pieces that will last a lifetime. The growing popularity of his furniture means that there is a waiting list. If you would like to check how long the wait might be before placing an order, please get in touch.
There is a choice of tops for most of the tables. The stone top is polished flagstone from Gairsty in Sandwick. When I visted the workshop, I found it very difficult to stop stroking the table top, as it has a wonderful silky feel.
