Raku Dish with Gold Glaze

This little dish has the distinctive cracked glaze of Japanese raku pottery. The turquoise and gold glazes are also typical of the style. The red hot pots are plunged into a container of sawdust, forcing the pot to take oxygen from the oxides in the glaze, creating the intense colours. David Holmes is happy to see visitors at his workshop on Shapinsay.

Each pot is, of course, unique but each piece in a particular style is very similar.
