Stanley Cursiter - a life of the artist
This book is worth buying for the illustrations alone. Stanley Cursiter was an artist of national standing, director of the National Galleries of Scotland 1930-1948 and the Queen’s Painter and Limner in Scotland but he was at heart an Orkneyman and no-one else has captured the light and beauty of Orkney as he did.
He was a prolific painter who also produced portraits, still lifes, conversation pieces and works inspired by the Futurist movement. You can admire them all here, in this lavishly and beautifully illustrated book published by Orkney Museums and Heritage to coincide with the exhibition of his work held in the Orkney Museum this summer.
Pamela Besant has written a comprehensive biography, covering all the aspects of his long life and including extensive quotes from Cursiter and others. This is followed by essays from a number of well qualified authorities, including Dr Jonathan Blackwood of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Neil Firth, Director of the Pier Arts Centre and Dr John Morrison of the University of Aberdeen.
The painting reproduced on the front of the book is 'Linklater and Greig', two well-known Stromness fishermen at work in the swirling waters off the cliffs of Yesnaby. It is on display in the Stromness Museum.
