Orkney From Old Photographs

It is a pleasure to see Orkney from old photographs re-printed. The book was first published in 1981, when Gordon Wright selected photos from the archive of the early Orcadian photographers - Tom Kent, Willie Hourston, William Hugh Wood, Robert Heddle Robertson and David Horne. Between them, they recorded every aspect of island life and this book provides a fascinating look at over one hundred years of life in these islands.

Here are lifeboat crews, kirk outings, children playing, families picnicking. Men and women are seen getting on with their work - grinding corn, cutting peats, dressing stones, shoeing horses, burning kelp.
