Almost An Island - The Story of an Orkney Parish
![]() | Price: £14.95 Supplier: Deerness Social History Group |
This is a very interesting and well-illustrated record of Orkney's most clearly defined parish. The Social History Group have done what we should all do - recorded the memories of a way of life before it is past recall. More than this, they have turned what they collected into a very readable and entertaining book, even for those of us with no direct connections with the parish.

I enjoyed the account of Kirk Socials and surely the most unusual salute Queen Victoria ever received. "Some ladies had prepared paper pokes of sandwiches and fancies and these were consumed with relish and speed as the race was on to be the first to finish, blow up and burst the poke and throw it at friend or foe. The visiting ministers were often the popular target.
Feb 1887 - from report: 'During a short interval the audience was served with an abundant supply of cake and fruit, and before commencing to the second part of the programme, at a given signal from the chairman, the bags were inflated and discharged in a volley with hearty goodwill in honour of the Queen's Jubilee, all heartily joining in this mark of respect to Her Majesty.'
