The 5000-year old Tomb of the Eagles was discovered by farmer Ronnie Simison in 1958 and excavated by him in 1976. It has fascinated visitors ever since and when Babette Barthelmess retired to Orkney in 1997, she turned her fascination into this book. As she says in the preface, the emphasis is “not to increase factual knowledge but to refine perception , to create awareness.”
The book is beautiful to look at, with full-page colour pictures facing each page of text. In the text she describes her regular early morning visits to the tomb through the summer, to see whether the rising sun shines into it. At midsummer the sun rises about 4 am so this required extraordinary commitment but the pictures show that it was worth the effort.
With her simple descriptions and meditations, the author conveys such a strong sense of place that anyone who has visited the tomb will be transported back there. If you haven’t yet discovered its magic for yourself, this book will at least allow you to travel there in your imagination.
