Orkney Traditional Tales Book 1
The first story in this series of Orkney folk-tales is well-known in Orkney, of a fiddler spending a night with the trows. Orkney story-teller, Tom Muir, and illustrator Bridget Woodford have produced an attractive and entertaining book, just the right size for a bed-time story or for an older child to read for themselves. The book is published by the Orkney Museum Service so helps to support them, while introducing a new generation to the age-old stories.

The peedie man was no bigger than a five-year-old child but his face was very old indeed and he had a long grey beard. His eyes were black as coal, and they twinkled with mischief and fun. Tam knew that the peedie man must be a trow, but he didn’t feel in the least scared of him.
The trow spoke again, “As the night is still young, and I couldn’t help hearing your beautiful fiddle playing, I was wondering if you would do me the honour of coming to my house and playing for me?”
Tam should have refused on the spot, but he couldn’t help feeling curious and said, “Aye, I’ll come and play for you.” So the bargain was made, and Tam followed the trow back to his home.
