Product Description

The story of the young good-for-nothing, Assipattle, and how he defeated the Stoor Worm used to be the best-known Orcadian fairy-tale. I was told it when I was young but it was in danger of being forgotten so it is an excellent choice for the third in Tom Muir's series of Orkney Traditional Tales for children. The clear text and Bridget Woodford's cheerful illustrations make it an excellent book to share with younger children or for slightly older children to read for themselves.

The series is an excellent way to keep the traditional tales alive and raise funds for the Orkney Museum Service and this book keeps up the high standards set by the first two.

One day a terrible thing happened, the Mester Stoor Worm arrived at the land where Assipattle lived. The Mester Stoor Worm was the father of all the Stoor Worms that lived in the sea and he was the cruellest and most terrible of all sea monsters. He had grown so big that he stretched right around the world. He caused floods whenever he breathed and earthquakes whenever he moved. He could crunch up the loftiest ship or sweep whole towns into his huge mouth with his forked tongue. His breath was poisonous and it killed every living thing it touched.
