Kirkwall Harbour
Two iron piers were built in Kirkwall Harbour at the beginning of the 19th Century. This is the West Pier, now encased in concrete but otherwise largely unchanged, with its cast iron beacon at the end. Most of the shipping, including the inter-island ferries, use the extended East Pier but the Kirkwall lifeboat ties up at this pier. The tall buildings in the background are the Kirkwall and St Ola Hotels.
