Dundas Street
Stromness has just one main street but the name changes as you travel south. By the time you arrive here, at the library, it is Dundas Street, named after the Earl of Zetland. This view is from the upper floor of the library and looks north. The wonderfully named Hellihole Road heads uphill to the left.
When R Menzies Fergusson visited Stromness in 1892, he remarked, "The prevailing idea of each proprietor appears to have been to have his house built as unlike his neighbour's as possible. Upon the whole the attempt may be said to have been a success." Looking at this picture you can see what he meant. You can also see that many of the houses are built side-on to the street. This is quite common in Stromness and Kirkwall.
If you haven't yet visited Stromness, you'll be suprised to learn that the street you see here is two-way. The paving is still the original stone, laid for the horse and cart, with a cobbled strip in the centre to give purchase for the horse's feet and smooth flagstones for the cart wheels.
