Corrigall Kitchen
This is part of the interior of the Corrigall Farm Museum in Harray. The straw-backed chair is pulled up to the fire and a cruisie lamp hangs on the mantlepiece alongside. Fish are drying on the 'raip' above the fire, that was also an excellent place for airing clothes.
I'm told that old Orkney houses could be very cosy, as the fire was always on and the stone walls could radiate some of this heat. This may be true but they were certainly likely to be draughty as well and the high curved back of the Orkney chair was designed to give some protection. This was only for the man of the house and perhaps his wife, junior members of the family had to make do with creepies.
