PAPAY, or PAPA WESTRAY (ON Papey hin Meiri, The Larger Isle of Papae (Celtic clergy). The island lies to the east of Westray, is about 7km (4.5 miles) long by 2km (1.25 miles) wide and is generally low-lying with a maximum elevation of 48m at the North Hill (HY498550). Very fertile, the island has been inhabited for at least 5,500 years. Its modern claim to fame is an entry in the "Guinness Book of Records" for having the shortest scheduled air route in the world, between Papay and Westray, a distance of 2.4km (1.5 miles), taking under two minutes flying time!
