Those interested in keeping their feet dry will find plenty of activities in Orkney as a large number of sports and activities are keenly followed.
Motocross has a large following with many events held
Golf Records of Golf being played in Orkney go back at least to the 17th century. The lairds played on the links on Sanday and also near the Ba' Lea at Papdale. In the 19th century the game was becoming more popular, and the links at Birsay and Deerness were regularly played on. There was a tradition on Sanday of a Golfing Festival starting on St Magnus Day, 16th April, which included much high living in the evenings.
